Toner contains at least six hazardous and toxic chemicals. When cartridges are thrown into landfills, these chemicals may seep into the groundwater and pollute  water and soil. In the UK alone, 75 million toner cartridges are thrown into landfills each year.

Each toner cartridge requires one or two liters of oil, and creates 4.8 kg of CO2 in its production. This represents, in the UK alone, an annual consumption of 200,000,000 liters of oil, and the creation of 480,000 metric tons of CO2. This is equivalent to the CO2 emission of a medium size car driving four billion kilometers.
